Plot Outline: 12 jurors must decide the fate of a Chechen teenager charged with murdering his stepfather.
Plot: A loose remake of 12 Angry Men (1957), set in a Russian school in the war-torn republic of Chechnya. 12 jurors are struggling to decide the fate of a Chechen teenager who allegedly killed his Russian stepfather. The jurors: a racist taxi-driver, a suspicious doctor, a vacillating TV producer, a Holocaust survivor, a flamboyant musician, a cemetery manager, and others represent the fragmented society of modern day Russia. Amidst the battle between Chechens and Russians outside, a stray bird (a touch of New Age cinema) is flying above the jurors' heads, alluding to tolerance.
Movie Quotes: Ethel Ann: I was 21 years old. My life was over.
Marie: 21? Mom that was before you married Daddy, before I was born. What happened?
Ethel Ann: It's none of your business
Crazy Credits: We know about 2 Crazy Credits. One of them reads:
The opening credits, rather than merely superimposed on the background, cast shadows and have reflections as if they exist in the scene.
Goofs: We know about 2 goofs. Here comes one of them:
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): At the end of the movie the head juror counts votes and counts himself last. But instead of “twelve” he says “thirteen” (in Russian). The error may have been deliberate.
Trivia: There are 3 entries in the trivia list – like these:
- Russia's Official Submission to the Best Foreign Language Film Category of the 80th Annual Academy Awards (2008).
- Youri Stoyanov's character (the guy “from” Harvard) shows the picture of his mom to the cemetery director. In fact it's Youri himself on the photo in female dress and make-up. Picture is taken from the TV-show “Gorodok” which made him a star.
- Sergei Garmash dreamed to participate in any Nikita Mikhalkov's movie for a long time. He literally begged the director to give him a role in his movie. One morning Mikhalkov called him and asked “Do you go to church”. Garmash said “Yes”. Mikhalkov then asked “Do you pray a lot?”. Garmash said “Yes”. Mikhalkov then said “Your prayers have been heard! The script is on the way”.
